TOP GLOBAL COMPANIES CALL FOR ZERO-EMISSIONS SHIPPING BY 2050

More than 150 leading companies and organizations, including oil majors and port authorities, called for the global shipping industry to be fully decarbonized by 2050, urging governments to step up action warning time was limited.

With about 90% of world trade transported by sea, global shipping accounts for nearly 3% of the world’s CO2 emissions, and the sector is under growing pressure to get cleaner.

UN shipping agency, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), has said it aims to reduce overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships by 50% from 2008 levels by 2050. Still, industry groups are calling for accelerated action from governments.

In the latest initiative, companies and groups – from shipping, chartering, finance, ports, and fuel production – say stronger measures are needed to ensure the sector will meet the climate goals set by the Paris accord, which seeks to limit global warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius.

The Call to Action initiative, developed by the World Economic Forum, the non-profit Global Maritime Forum and other partners, emphasized the role of governments and regulators in establishing proper policy frameworks.

An IMO spokesperson said the UN agency had a “clear plan of work ahead”, including discussion of further measures to reduce GHG emissions from ships, which would provide member states “with the opportunity to review the current strategy and put forward proposals for new ambitions”.

The initiative’s other signatories include container lines A.P. Moller – Maersk (MAERSKb.CO), MSC and Hapag Lloyd (HLAG.DE), oil majors BP (BP.L) and Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L), mining groups BHP (BHPB.L) and Rio Tinto (RIO.L), agri groups Cargill and Bunge and others such as the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp as well as the Panama Canal Authority.

ONE MORE CHANNEL FOR STUDENTS IN DIFFICULTIES DURING THE EPIDEMIC IN HO CHI MINH CITY

On September 20, Ho Chi Minh City Union of Trading Cooperatives (Saigon Co.op) said that from today, thousands of difficult students in Ho Chi Minh City who cannot return to their hometown would have more opportunities to be supported buying necessities through the application “R-One Connecting Great Circles”. This app is implemented by Ho Chi Minh City Union of Trade Cooperatives (Saigon Co.op) and Recycle One Social Enterprise.

The two units have put the program “Appreciation App – Connecting Love” into operation to connect individuals and organizations to help students in difficulties, unable to return to their hometown due to the COVID-19 epidemic in Ho Chi Minh City.

Students just need to download and register their information on the “R-One Connecting Great Circles” application. Based on registration information, Recycle One will coordinate with schools and authorities to conduct an appraisal, then publish information that needs support on the app and website for sponsor donation.

Donors can directly choose to support each student case on the website https://www.recycleone.vn/noivongtaylon/. Each gift is a 300,000 VND voucher at Saigon Co.op supermarket system, as well as precious love and affection in the epidemic.

Initially, the program was started at Nong Lam University Ho Chi Minh City, with thousands of students temporarily residing in Tan Binh District, Binh Thanh District, District 5 and Thu Duc City in need.

After the pilot process until the end of 2021, the program “Appreciation App – Connecting Love” will gradually expand the target so that it can reach more difficult situations in Ho Chi Minh City.
