In today’s globalized world, being able to communicate effectively in English can open up many doors in fields such as business, trade, and international relations. As a result, English skills are becoming increasingly important for people who want to stand out in the labor market and beyond.

On November 30, 2023, the Department of Student Affairs and the Faculty of Foreign Languages hosted a language workshop titled “Strategies for Improving Business English” with the participation of Ms. Camille Williams from the US Consulate to provide attendees with practical advice and strategies to use English in everyday life.

Ms. Williams shared three specific strategies to improve learners’ business English skills during the language discussion session. To begin, we can employ the SMART model (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound), which is a useful tool for setting personal goals. For example, it is acceptable to set a goal such as “I will listen to one hour of English content every day for the next three months.”  This can be an audiobook, a podcast, or any other type of content. I will track my progress and try to learn something new every day.”

Ms. Williams then emphasizes the importance of developing a habit as a deciding factor. We need to clearly define our goals and gradually begin with small actions, using things that can remind us to do it consistently! Ms. Williams recommends that we use reliable sources such as Ted Talks, news sites such as CNN, BBC… during the learning process to make the journey of learning English easier.

In addition to studying, we can use English for entertainment purposes such as music, movies, books, stories, podcasts or form a study group with friends who have same goal of learning English and can always provide constructive feedback.

Learners have the opportunity to write down their goals at the end of the workshop.  As a result of this interactive activity, learners will gradually understand and gain motivation to strategize on their English learning journey.

Ms. Williams contends that self-belief is essential. Developing a growth mindset and overcoming pessimistic thinking patterns will surely inspire us to become more self-assured and effective.
