Reading and understanding scientific researches, which filled with lengthy paragraphs and complex sentence structures, can be a daunting challenge for many students. To address this difficulties, the UEH English Zone organized a Language Workshop: “Smart Reading Strategies: Understanding Scientific Research with Ease” offer valuable insights and practical strategies to help students approach this challenging format with greater ease and confidence.

The event featured M.A. Tô Ngọc Vy, a specialist with extensive expertise in the field of Applied Linguistics. M.A. Ngọc Vy guided participants through an engaging exploration of effective reading techniques. During the session, she challenged widely used methods such as skimming and scanning, noting that these strategies often demand a strong vocabulary base in order to be used effectively. Instead, she emphasized the significance of recognizing word patterns as a more efficient approach to reading. This strategy, she explained, can enhance comprehension while reducing the reader’s dependence on extensive vocabulary knowledge.

The workshop delved into practical, results-driven strategies designed to boost both speed and accuracy in reading scientific research. Participants gained valuable insights into a structured approach known as linear thinking, which breaks down the reading process into two clear, actionable steps:

  • Step 1: Simplify – Focus on understanding individual sentences to grasp core ideas with clarity.
  • Step 2: Read for Connections – Move beyond isolated sentences to understand how they interrelate within a paragraph, building a coherent picture of the research narrative.

In the second section, Ma. Ngoc Vy emphasized the importance of recognizing the typical structure of scientific papers, which often follow a three-part framework:

  • Part 1: Design – Methods – Description
  • Part 2: Research – Outcomes – Findings
  • Part 3: Discussion – Implications – Limitations

Students were also introduced to a variety of high-quality resources commonly used as scientific sources in the IELTS Reading test, including well-known publications like The New Yorker and National Geographic. These materials offer valuable opportunities for effective practice, helping students become more familiar with the types of texts they may encounter on the exam.

To reinforce the newly introduced reading strategies, Ms. Ngọc Vy guided students through practical exercises for real time application, deepening their understanding.  Additionally, attendees had the opportunity to receive various attractive gifts adding an element of excitement to the learning experience.

The workshop wrapped up with an energetic kahoot and Q&A session, during which MA. Ngọc Vy emphasized the importance of retaining what you learn. She emphasized that a key to effective reading lies in understanding the structure of academic texts, rather than attempting to read and interpret every single word. This shift in approach, she explained, can significantly enhance reading efficiency and comprehension. Participants left the session not only with practical strategies but also with increased confidence to apply these techniques in both their academic studies and future professional activities.

As part of the UEH English Zone project, these monthly language workshops provide students and staff with opportunities to enhance their language and academic skills. In the coming months, UEH English Zone will expand its activities to the Nguyen Van Linh Campus, offering an even broader platform for learning and growth.
