It can be difficult to distinguish between spelling and pronunciation when learning a foreign language. Due to mispronounced words, learners struggle with pronunciation even after they have mastered grammar and vocabulary. So how to overcome this barrier and confidently speak up?

A language workshop titled “Capture your letters” featuring Ms. Nham Thi Ngoc was conducted on June 21, 2024, on the Microsoft Teams platform by UEH English Zone and the School of Foreign Languages with the goal of adding interest to the process of learning a foreign language.

Ms. Ngoc stated before the program that perfect pronunciation is a result of practice rather than thought. By using a dictionary frequently, practicing pronunciation, listening, and focusing on word connections, you can progressively improve your pronunciation naturally with the rhythm, intonation, and emphasis. Pronounce with your Mouth, not your Mind. Do not be scared to make mistakes – practice and you will get better at it.”

The speaker analyzed three main factors to improve English pronunciation in an intuitive and easy-to-apply

The workshop covers common pronunciation errors in English through practice exercises, with a focus on stress or link sounds during speech.  There can be communication misunderstandings when Vietnamese speakers fail to recognize or misplace the important English component of stress in multisyllable words. Furthermore, Ms. Ngoc divulges tips for accurate pronunciation. She gives thorough directions on how to make sounds and where to articulate them. To make the lessons easier for participants to understand, each tutorial includes detailed examples.
