For effective English communication, pronunciation is one of the essentials. However, many English learners still do not focus on learning the correct pronunciation. When encountering a new word, learners will sometimes guess the pronunciation based on the word’s spelling. May the habit of “reading English as Vietnamese” can lead to incorrect readings, mispronounced vocabulary, and even very familiar and essential phrases.

Besides, focusing on pronunciation will also significantly improve learners’ listening ability. By mastering the correct pronunciation of words in English, learners can become familiar with the sounds in English, improve their listening skills, and distinguish between words that are easily misread.

To help UEHer have the opportunity to improve their pronunciation skills, UEH English Zone and the School of Foreign Languages brought a workshop with the topic “THE PRONUNCIATION OF ENGLISH: EXPERIENCE, PRACTICE AND RESEARCH” in the series of periodic activities Language Workshop. With the companionship of Dr. Nguyen Tan Loc, lecturer at the School of Foreign Languages, UEH University.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Loc Tan Nguyen obtained his Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, in 2019. He has been teaching different English courses (both undergraduate and graduate levels), including phonetics and phonology, pronunciation, academic writing, and curriculum design. His research focuses on pronunciation teaching and learning, teacher cognition, teacher education, and professional learning for language teachers.

Abstract

Pronunciation is a fundamental component of communicative success, but recent research has shown that L2 teachers usually ignored this important aspect of the language in their classes and that many L2 learners voiced a strong need for more instruction. In this talk, I will present how my personal experience in learning and teaching English pronunciation has led me to this field of research:

  1. I will discuss what sparked my interest in learning and teaching pronunciation.
  2. I will share my experience, as both an ESL learner and an instructor, in learning and teaching English pronunciation.
  3. I will respond to your questions about pronunciation learning, especially how to better your pronunciation (to the best of my knowledge).
