Did you know, Listening comprehension is sometimes called the “Cinderella skill” (Jalongo, 2010; Vandergrift, 1997) because it tends to be neglected in ELT. Unfortunately, listening skill is not generally given much attention in language learning programs and curriculum when it provides exposure to the language, and students receive a lot of input not only on grammar and vocabulary but also on paralinguistic clues and suprasegmental features of language… making many language learners confused when processing.

Listening is an essential criterion for assessing the candidate’s ability to use language. Especially for those preparing for standardized tests, listening for main ideas is a joint exercise in TOEFL, IELTS, and TOEIC tests and grasping the main topic or content of the document. Therefore, Listening for Gist is necessary to help learners learn the main information and have a general understanding of the topic without focusing too much on detailed information.

To help UEHer have the opportunity to improve on these special skills and prepare for international exams, UEH English Zone and the School of Foreign Languages brought a workshop with the topic “LISTENING FOR GIST” in the series of periodic activities Language Workshop, with our amazing speaker Dr. Gülnigar Baham, Kansai Foreign Languages University, Japan.
